Dr. Mihail (Mike) Mitov joined the Sam Houston State University (SHSU) College of Osteopathic Medicine (COM) in December 2024. He is an Associate Professor of Physiology in the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology. Established in 2019, the SHSU-COM offers the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree and strives to be one of the nation's leading DO medical schools and programs.

In 1999, Dr. Mitov earned his BS and MSc in Biology from Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski," the oldest and most prestigious institution of higher education in Sofia, Bulgaria. He completed his PhD in Parasitology and Helminthology in 2004 at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. In 2005, Dr. Mitov relocated to the US to begin his postdoctoral work at the University of Kentucky, where he engaged in multidisciplinary research and medical education. Over the past 20 years, his research has focused on muscle biology, metabolic complications, protein biochemistry, cell biology, protein post-translational modifications, redox biology, mitochondrial function and energy metabolism, cancer, immunology, and neurodegeneration.

Dr. Mitov's career as a biomedical educator began in 2014 when he joined the Breckinridge School of Nursing at ITT Technical Institute in Lexington, KY, as an Adjunct Faculty member. He subsequently taught various undergraduate and premed courses at the Kentucky Community & Technical College.

In 2018, he became a founding faculty member at the Idaho College of Osteopathic Medicine (ICOM). At that time, ICOM was established as Idaho's first medical school dedicated to training students to become highly competent and caring osteopathic physicians. After seven years at ICOM, Dr. Mitov started his current role as an Associate Professor of Physiology at SHSU-COM in 2024. Dr. Mitov is enthusiastic and approachable, enjoying interactions with students in both educational and research settings.
