Director's Welcome

Thank you for your interest in the Sam Houston State University College of Osteopathic Medicine/Huntsville Memorial Hospital Family Medicine Residency (ACGME Program Code: 1204800008; NRMP Program Code: 2291120C0). This program has been granted ACGME Initial Accreditation. In short, this program aims to train physicians to serve the population of rural East Texas. This aligns with the mission of Sam Houston State University College of Osteopathic Medicine and the motto of SHSU, “The Measure of a Life is its Service.” HMH FMR will continue to grow to a 4-4-4 program (12 total residents through three years of training) in the coming years.

Huntsville Memorial Hospital is a Joint Commission-accredited, not-for-profit 98-bed acute care community hospital delivering quality care to the residents of Walker County and its surrounding communities since 1927. Huntsville Memorial Hospital is now accredited by the Center for Improvement in Healthcare Quality (CIHQ). The Huntsville Memorial Rural Health Clinic will house the HMH Family Medicine Residency Clinic, conveniently located less than a mile from the hospital site and currently has over 13,000 annual patient visits with services including Family Medicine, OBGYN, comprehensive Women’s Health, orthopedics, and minor emergency care with onsite laboratory and X-Ray. Residents will learn the foundations of practicing primary care for all who call a rural community their home.

Unopposed Program

We are the only residency program in Walker County, with a rapidly growing population of 80,000.

Rotation Sites

Residents rotate primarily at Huntsville Memorial Hospital and have their continuity clinic within the hospital’s Rural Health Clinic. Off Site rotations include Behavioral Medicine, Outpatient Pediatrics, Inpatient Pediatrics, and Newborn Medicine located in Conroe, TX or The Woodlands, TX. Some other rotations may be combined locally and offsite.

TDCJ Population

Huntsville Memorial Hospital has a CCU “Correctional

Care Unit” and serves patients that are incarcerated within the Texas Department of Criminal Justice System. We safely manage the care of these patients within a lockdown unit within our facility.

Opportunities with SHSU Athletics and Local Sporting Events

Being affiliated with SHSU has amazing advantages! There are opportunities to be on the sidelines to provide medical care for the SHSU Football, Soccer, and Basketball teams. There are also opportunities to provide medical care for other local events like the Houston Marathon. Residents also frequently go to the campus athletic training room to assess sports related injuries and perform annual sports physicals.

Didactics

Didactics are held every Friday from noon to 4pm where all residents (depending on hospital rotation coverage) attend lectures from SHSU professors and residency attending physicians. There will be opportunities for residents to present cases, topics or research. Procedure practice can also take place at this time in the SHSU-COM SIM hospital as requested or as needed.

Curriculum

Decker Med Family Medicine Weekly Curriculum TM - Family Medicine is first and foremost a continuously updated online publication teaching principles and practice. Organized according to ABFM Blueprint, FM offers readings, guidelines and educational tools for all levels of lifelong learning. From MS3 clerkship to Board-prep for residents to CME and MOC for practitioners, the all new FM educational resource is with you every step of the way, for all screens and devices.

Journal Club

Journal Club is ongoing throughout the academic year where residents will discuss medical journals and their applicability to the clinical setting. Residents will have autonomy in selecting the articles and will all have the opportunity to present.

Hospital Committees

Residents are encouraged to participate in hospital committees such as Tumor Board, Cardiology Committee, Trauma Committee and many more. Residents can connect with hospital directors and other physicians during the committee meetings.

Location

Huntsville, TX is located in the piney woods and rolling hills of East Texas, approximately 70 miles north of Houston and 170 miles South of Dallas on Interstate 45.

SHSU Main Campus

Enjoy main campus with a recreation center that includes a rock-climbing wall, swimming pool, basketball courts and fitness classes. Hang out at the LSC student center where there’s a bowling alley and game room and several dining options. Join the BearKats during football season for Texas tailgating with music, food, and fun!

Local Dining Options

There is a vibrant food scene in Huntsville. Visit family local owned food trucks at Arnaud's Food Truck Park or try All-American cuisine at Humphrey’s with an upbeat vibe. Bustlin Mexican and Salvadoran fare at Carbonero are great options along with many popular chain restaurants for the whole family.

Parks

The Huntsville State Park is located within the Sam Houston National Forest. Visit the Sam Houston statue, take a walk in the park or fish in Lake Raven, Lake Conroe, or Lake Livingston.

Family Friendly

Huntsville, TX is family friendly with many parks, a local splash pad, and many daycare centers. There are also a variety of churches with various denominations.
