Education Prof Addresses Tuition Costs In Houston Area

Assistant professor of educational leadership Matthew Fuller reflected on the impact of the economy on college attendance in a Community Impact News article on the rising cost of postsecondary education in the Houston area. Prof Comments On 'Dismantling' Of Houston's African American History

Associate professor of history Bernadette Pruitt questioned why African American history is "so easily discarded" in an op-ed in the Houston Chronicle. Her piece explored the history of the area of Houston designated as Freemen's Town, which, in being upgraded could remove the original bricks laid by former slaves. History Professor Recalls Tax-Cut History For Wall Street Journal

Brian Domitrovic, chair of the history department, co-wrote a piece with Larry Kudlow that appeared in The Wall Street Journal on March 4, 2014, on the history of the Democratic Party champion tax cuts. The article was written to recognize the 50th anniversary of President Lyndon B. Johnson signing sweeping tax cuts and discussed the historical effects of that legislation.

Economics Professor Shares Thoughts On Income Inequality

Professor of economics Mark Frank discussed his data on income inequality in Texas since the 1970s in a Dallas Morning News article. His statistics show the disparity in the income taken home for the top 10 and top 1 percent of earners and suggest that the gap has widened between the rich in the poor since the 1970s. His research also has appeared on NPR and in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Ruffin's New Book Featured in Jackson Magazine

The Jackson (Mississippi) Clarion Ledger/Jackson Magazine recently ran a piece on Paul Ruffin's new collection of essays, Travels With George In Search of Ben Hur. Ruffin is the 2009 Texas State Poet Laureate, a Texas State University System Regents Professor, and Distinguished Professor of English at SHSU.

Bytheway, 'Body Farm' Featured In Houston Chronicle

Joan Bytheway, director of SHSU's Southeast Texas Applied Forensic Science Facility, and the facility itself were featured in a Houston Chronicle article by Allan Turner on the work done there. STAFS is one of four willed body donation sites in the world for the study of forensic science, especially as it pertains to human remains, for crime scene and criminal investigations. Before joining SHSU, Bytheway evaluated mass graves in Iraq, which led to the conviction of Saddam Hussein.

Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Management Victor Sower answered questions on his latest book Better Business Decisions Using Cost Modeling: For Procurement, Operations, and Supply Chain Professionals, co-authored with his son Chris, in a profile for the Texas Economy, a website run by the Texas Comptroller's office that provides news, trends and analysis on issues affecting the state's economy.

Policing Program Highlighted On 'Voice'

Sam Houston State University's police exchange program with Zhejiang Police College in China was recently featured on Voice of America in a story on Chinese/American policing collaborations. The story profiled Chinese police cadets who study for a year at the College of Criminal Justice and a video of their internships with the Alvin and League City Police Departments.

Article Examining Reagan's Gas-Price Policy Features Domitrovic

History department chair Brian Domitrovic was interviewed by Investor's Business Daily for an article that examines President Ronald Reagan's "vital lesson on reducing gas prices." Domitrovic argues that when Reagan's energy, monetary and tax cut policies were in full swing in early 1983, "the whole energy crisis was on the cusp of vanishing from the scene."

Houston Station Features Forensic Scientist

Joan Bytheway, director of the Southeast Texas Applied Forensic Science Facility, was recently featured on Houston's CBS affiliate KHOU-TV. Bytheway helped the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office piece together a 2010 murder case, leading to a post plea confession by the suspect.
