It is rumored that Sam Houston State University selected the Bearkat as a mascot due a saying at the time, “tough as a bearcat.” SHSU School of Nursing alumna, Rachel Stewart proved herself among the toughest of Bearkats as she earned her nursing degree despite becoming paralyzed in the middle of her academic journey.  

Sam Houston State University is broadening its commitment to empowering high school students with expanded access to higher education opportunities. Launched in 2023 through partnerships with Huntsville ISD and Goose Creek CISD, the Bearkat Advantage Program is now reaching even more districts across Texas. 

Sam Houston State University strives to set its students up for success post-graduation by incorporating real-world circumstances into its curriculum. The College of Business and Administration’s Marketing Consulting course does just that, giving students essential consulting skills through hands-on experiences with real clients to ensure they feel prepared and confident in their future roles.

The Food Pantry at Sam Houston State University is excited to announce that it has received a generous $100,000 grant from the Houston-based Powell Foundation to help fight food insecurity, improve health outcomes and promote health equity throughout the region.
