Scholarships
The LEAP Center works to support students who are working to achieve academic excellence. The Center does this by offering resources and opportunities for highly-motivated students. In addition, the LEAP Center offers small scholarships to its Ambassadors, provides support to the Austin Interns, offers a small scholarship to pre-law students, and offers an LSAT Prep Course, when funding permits.
LSAT Prep Course "Scholarship": Each Spring the LEAP Center accepts applications for an LSAT Prep Course. This course would likely have between 3-8 students in it and be conducted through Zoom, taught by Ricky Kaplan, who has more than two decades experience in test preparation, and who also has been Assistant Attorney General in both Texas and Minnesota. To be eligible for the scholarship, students should be classified as a Junior or Senior. In addition, we are looking for students who will not be taking classes this summer, who are members of the Pre-Law Society, who took our Spring Mock LSAT, and whose overall academic performance suggests a likelihood of success in law school. Once we receive all applications, we will ensure the students have requisite hours and are members of PLS, and then we will evaluate the student on (1) their GPA, (2) their Mock LSAT score, (3) their activity level in PLS, (4) their activity level in related LEAP Center events. Students who accept this award should be committed to clearing their summer of extraneous activities so they can focus on the LSAT Prep Course, attending all the prep course classes, completing all the assignments, sitting for the diagnostic tests, and being prepared to take the August LSAT.
You can find the application for the LSAT Prep Course here in PDF and here in MS Word.
Deadline: The deadline for 2022 scholarships is April 15. Awards will be announced on May 1.
Please email your signed application to Professor Mike Yawn at mike.yawn@shsu.edu.
PLS Scholarship: Each year, the LEAP Center gives small scholarships to students who compete in small contests or random drawings during a PLS meeting, and, when funds are available, we also give a competitive scholarship. The competitive scholarships are geared toward freshmen or sophomores, and are based on GPA, attendance at PLS meetings, and participation in PLS and LEAP related events. This is designed to assist students with prep books, trips to law schools, or similar pre-law costs, but there are no restrictions on how the students uses the funds. Scholarships typically range between $250-$500.
