Law and Order Comes to SHSU
This spring semester will mark the 9th visit of the 10th Court of Appeals at SHSU.

10th Court of Appeals Comes to SHSU

When: April 3, 2024 @ 10 a.m., 11 a.m., and 1:30 p.m.

Where: Kerper Courtroom, CJ Center

The Center for Law, Engagement, And Politics (LEAP) will host Oral Arguments for the 10th Court of Appeals on Wednesday, April 3, 2024. The cases involve manslaughter (10am), sexual abuse of a child (11am), and murder (1:30pm), although please note that it is possible that the cases get rearranged. All cases should last about 50 minutes. The case descriptions will be posted prior to the event.

This unusual event gives local residents and students the opportunity to gain an up-close view of their legal system at work. The event is open to the public, but the court enforces a dress code and seats are limited.

The dress code prohibits short-shorts, tank tops, halter tops, caps/hats, sweat pants, tights/leggings without outerwear, mini-skirts, or any clothing with inappropriate language or images, and other inappropriate attire.

Weapons – No weapons are allowed in the room where the oral arguments are taking place.

Electronic Devices –ALL electronic devices must be either turned off or to the silent mode.

Photos, Broadcasting, Recording– No photos, broadcasting or recording devices are allowed during the oral argument session.

Food and/or Drink – No food or drink is allowed during the oral argument session. This also includes tobacco products and chewing gum.

Behavior – Any person who disrupts the proceedings by talking, making noise, public display of signs, or similar conduct will be required to leave the courtroom.

Entrance and Departure – The Court strongly encourages the entering and departure of the courtroom to be kept to a minimum.

Attendees should arrive a few minutes early and plan to stay in the courtroom until at least 50 minutes past the hour. The court typically allows students to leave at 50 past in case they need to get to their next class.
