The Festive Marches
Marcia No. 6, Op. 168, PP.144.6
Marcia No. 6 is one of three works Ponchielli hired rejected Austrian Vicemaestro Johannes Haagen to prepare in March(?) of 1866. As noted in the discussion of Marcia No. 5, these scores are among very few with an actual BB-flat Pelittone part orchestrated. As a 6/8 march, Marcia No. 6 displays Ponchielli's fondness for grace notes and trills to ornament the main melody. If a tempo faster than 100 M.M. is contemplated the grace of these figures deteriorates substantially. Further, the rhythmic "backbeats" in the horns and trumpets become "frantic" instead of merely "energetic."
