Eligibility Requirements
The Elliott T. Bowers Honors College invites all incoming freshmen, incoming transfer students, and current SHSU students who meet the requirements to apply. If you do not meet the requirements but wish to be considered for admission, please see below for information regarding holistic review.
The requirements for admission to the Elliott T. Bowers Honors College are as follows:
Holistic Review
Incoming students, if you feel that you are eligible to join, but your GPA or standardized test scores fall below the minimum requirements, you are encouraged to apply. These are only a few of the many requirements considered during the selection process. You may want to include an explanation in the form of a cover letter outlining why you believe that you should be considered a potential candidate. Please email a completed application package to honors@shsu.edu for holistic review.
Note:
For current and transfer students, the freshman or sophomore status requirement means that you must have at least four full semesters to complete at Sam Houston State University. For example, a current or transfer student admitted Fall 2023 must be a full-time student enrolled in face-to-face classes for at least Fall 2023, Spring 2024, Fall 2024, and Spring 2025 semesters.
Admitted students must be full-time SHSU students enrolled primarily in face-to-face courses; we cannot accept fully online students at this time.
