ACE Course Impacts Lives At A Maternity Home
Academic Community Engagement (ACE) students worked with Journey Home, an organization based in Montgomery County, Texas. They are a non-profit maternity home that provides safety and shelter for pregnant women experiencing homelessness, as well as toddlers and newborns. They also help educate the women on various topics ranging from prenatal care to child nutrition.
SHSU Joins JED Campus Mental Health Initiative
Sam Houston State University is taking significant steps to enhance the mental health and well-being of its students by joining the JED Campus program, a national initiative dedicated to improving mental health, preventing suicides and reducing substance abuse on college campuses. This four-year strategic collaboration with the Jed Foundation emphasizes SHSU’s commitment to fostering a supportive campus environment where students can thrive.
Here to Help: Jack Staggs Counseling Clinic
As it approaches its 20-year anniversary, Sam Houston State University’s Jack Staggs Counseling Clinics are gearing up for a new semester of training counselor education students while addressing the mental healthcare needs of Huntsville and The Woodlands. Operating on a semester-to-semester basis, the clinics offer adolescent, couple, family, group and individual counseling as well as play and sand tray therapy.
Empowering Heritage As Graduate Students Redefine Higher Education
In 2022, Sam Houston State University received the federal designation of Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI), making the university eligible for up to $10 million in additional funding from the U.S. Department of Education to enhance educational opportunities for students. In support of this goal, Marcus Gutierrez and Daniela Mirabal participated in the Texas Association of Chicanos in Higher Education (TACHE) conference in February.

Wellness begins within, making mental health crucial to our overall well-being. As awareness of mental health rises, it’s essential for future counselors to not only learn but also apply their knowledge in real-world settings, where they can make a meaningful impact.
Bearkats Abroad: Education Students Study Abroad In Costa Rica
Professors Francisco Usero-Gonzalez and Burcu Ates led students from Sam Houston State University to venture into Costa Rica for a unique study abroad program from May 11 to May 20. This trip was designed for students interested in pursuing a career in English as a Second Language (ESL) education, offering them an invaluable opportunity to experience teaching in a different cultural context and assist local educators.
COE Professor Named Distinguished Faculty Mentor By The Graduate And Professional School
Jessica McQueston has been recognized for her work on mentoring three graduate students this year in the Sam Houston State University Graduate and Professional School’s ASPIRE/ROAD to PhD program. She was honored with the Distinguished Faculty Mentor Award at the ASPIRE/ROAD to PhD Appreciation and Celebration Dinner.
ACE Course Faculty Highlight: Professor Maintains Community Engaged Courses For Years
Lisa Brown has served as an Academic Community Engagement (ACE) coordinator for the College of Education (COE) for several years and she has consistently incorporated ACE principles into her courses since 2012.
