SHSU NOYCE Scholarship

National Science Foundation
Robert Noyce Scholarship Program

The highly prestigious, nationally recognized Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship supports exceptional students who plan to teach STEM fields in a high-needs school with $10,000 per academic year. The scholarship, funded by the National Science Foundation, is renewable for up to two years. Once awarded, scholars do not need to re-apply.

Sophomores and Juniors who are interested in teaching STEM can earn a starting salary of $60,000. While STEM is comprised of several areas of study, certifications areas available at SHSU are for Math and Science, grades 7-12. Certain districts in the State of Texas also offer additional stipends for teaching in STEM fields and in high-needs schools. As a Teacher, you also become eligible to apply for the Teach Grant (Federal Loan Forgiveness.)

For eligible scholars, the Noyce Scholarship Program can provide up to two years of SHSU tuition at $10,000 per year. (About $5000, a semester for up to 4 semesters.)

*Ideally applicants should be of Sophomore or Junior standing at SHSU or be transfer ready from a community college and be willing to double major in STEM + earn a teaching certification. However, classification exceptions may apply. We are happy to answer any specific questions you may have about eligibility.

  • Qualifications

    To qualify, students must:

    • Be classified as a Sophomore or Junior (exceptions may apply). SHSU classification hours can be view here
    • Earn a secondary single subject teaching certification in a STEM subject (Math/Science) and teach in a secondary (grades 7-12) high-needs school. Although STEM is comprised of various subject areas, the SHSU certification areas that align with NSF requirements are for Math and Science.
    • Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75, which is the GPA required for admission into the Educator Prep Program (EPP)
    • Be a US citizen or lawful permanent resident. Noyce is a federally funded program, so SHSU is not at liberty to provide flexibility for this requirement.
    • Provide unofficial transcripts from all previously attended institutions, an updated resume, and a letter of support from a STEM Faculty Member

  • Commitment Requirement

The scholarship requires that recipients commit to completing two years of full-time teaching in a high-needs school district for each year of scholarship support. A 2-year scholarship would require a 4-year teaching commitment. The teaching commitment must be fulfilled within eight years after completing the program. If the teaching commitment is not fulfilled, repayment of the scholarship is required.
