What is a Presentation?

SMM supports its mission to help Bearkats achieve financial independence by offering presentations that empower and educate participants. SMM staff provides presentations on various topics to students, faculty, and staff throughout the year. After scheduling a presentation, a representative from SMM will contact you within 48 hours of receiving the request. Please allow two weeks' advance notice when possible. Presentations can be tailored to fit an audience better; please reach out if you need this service.

We do not provide tax assistance, investment advice, or referrals to specific financial institutions.

Navigating Financial Aid

Did you know you can complete your entire financial aid process through your phone? Join us as we walk you through the financial aid process, researching financial help, and understanding/appealing the satisfactory academic progress (SAP) requirement you need to qualify for financial aid.

Objectives

Educate participants on the financial aid process through the eyes of a SHSU student. Participants will learn how to navigate the Financial Aid website, their MySam financial award package, and know who to contact for help with appeals for the satisfactory academic progress (SAP) requirement.

Level Up Your Life

Take a moment to think about your goals and dreams - now, how are you going to fund those? Join us as we help you clarify your future goals, discuss budgeting and how it can help you, and review decisions that could impact you now.

Objectives

Empower participants to look at their current situation so they can financially prepare for their future goals. Participants will learn how to set up SMART goals, set up a budget, understand different types of budgeting, and be aware of campus resources.

The Search for Scholarships

Summary

Free money doesn't normally fall into your lap, so how do you find it? Join us as we discuss how to find internal and external scholarships, what tools and resources to use, and how to avoid scams.

Objectives

Inform participants on legitimate resources that can be used to find and apply for scholarship funding both internally and externally. Participants will learn how to navigate the scholarship world, what to expect when applying, and how to keep their information safe.

The Borrowing!

Summary

Why are student loans daunting and scary? Join us as we 'unmask' general loan perceptions and dig into how private and federal loans work, how they can be managed, and what options you have regarding borrowed money.

Objectives

Instruct part pants on loan perceptions and how to make an educated decision for themselves to continue their academic career. Participants will learn how private and federal loans work, where to find tools and resources to help, and how they can manage and make payments on their loans after they graduate.

The Credit Game

How does credit work? Give yourself a head start in life and join us in learning how your credit affects your future, how it can be managed, and how to make it work for you.

Objectives

Educate participants on how credit is created, reported, and how it affects future. Participants will learn about the different types of credit, how to manage their credit, and what they need to do to build on their financial foundation.

After the Degree

Summary

What type of lifestyle do you want once you have that degree in hand? Join us as we walk through financial expectations, obligations, and decisions that you will have to make after you graduate no matter what path you decide to take. You can start planning for these now!

Objectives

Encourage participants to look at the lifestyle they want to lead after they graduate and how to finance that lifestyle no matter if they continue their education, go into their career field, or choose another path in life. Participants will utilize the Texas Reality Check calculator, discuss financial obligations, and receive and overview of how life choices can affect their finances, goals, and dreams.
