Come-and-Go
SHSU Alumni Association hosts a fun kick-off to the Saturday activities! Come enjoy a delicious breakfast and learn about exciting opportunities their office supports: including eligibility for the coveted 2025 SHSU Tuition Draw, as well as engagement opportunities for your current student through the Student Alumni Association (SAA). Bearkat door prizes will be drawn every 15 minutes during breakfast! Special guest welcomes from SHSU administrators including SHSU's President, Dr. Alisa White at 9:00 AM.

Life on the Houston Farm
Sam Houston Memorial Museum and Republic of Texas Presidential Library - 1836 Sam Houston Avenue

Come step back in time with us at the museum and learn about our university's namesake. Walk the actual property once owned by Sam and Margaret Houston. Visit with costumed interpreters to learn about life on the Houston Farm and Texas in the 1850s. See the Houston family home, known as the Woodland Home, on its original site; Bear Bend Cabin, reported to be Sam's hunting lodge; and the Houston Mercantile in the Roberts-Farris Cabin, representing the Maryville, Tennessee store of the early 1800s that Sam worked in when he was a young man. Then tour the Memorial Museum (free admission during the event time) and view the permanent exhibits of the museum, including the largest collection of Houston artifacts and memorabilia anywhere. (Note: If you are unable to make our Life on the Houston Farm program, the Memorial Museum is open 9AM - 4:30PM on Saturday and 12:00PM - 4:30PM on Sunday.)

Discover the many academic opportunities waiting for you at Sam Houston State University! During our Academic Open House, students and their families can meet representatives from each of SHSU’s eight colleges: the College of Arts & Media, College of Business Administration, College of Criminal Justice, College of Education, College of Health Sciences, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, College of Science & Engineering Technology, and the College of Osteopathic Medicine. Learn about degree programs, research opportunities, student organizations, and career pathways available in each college. This is your chance to ask questions, gather information, and get inspired about the academic journey ahead.

    Start your Family Day with a warm cup of coffee and a welcoming conversation hosted by the Office of First-Year Experience (FYE). Come enjoy refreshments, ask questions, and discover how FYE fosters a sense of belonging and academic success for your student.

    We encourage parents and families to enjoy lunch on their own and explore some of the wonderful local dining options in the Huntsville area. Whether you're in the mood for classic Southern comfort food, international cuisine, or a quick bite, there’s something nearby for everyone to enjoy. It’s a great opportunity to experience the local flavor and spend quality time together before the afternoon activities begin!

Join fellow students and families in showing your school spirit and supporting our women’s volleyball team. Admission is free for all SHSU students and tickets can be purchased online at a discounted rate for Bearkat Family Day guests. Don’t miss the action, energy, and Bearkat pride!

    Plant Yourself at SHSU

    Add a little greenery to your space and make a memory with your Bearkat at our Residence Life event! Residents and their families are invited to stop by and create a custom potted plant to take back and brighten up their residence hall room. We will provide the pots, soil, and a variety of plants, just bring your creativity! Light refreshments, including drinks and snacks, will be available as you pot, decorate, and connect with the Residence Life team. It is a fun, hands-on way to make SHSU feel even more like home.

This year’s rodeo and western-themed celebration invites students and their families to kick back and enjoy a night full of fun and excitement. Try your hand at thrilling carnival games, including mechanical bull riding, dance to the beats of our live DJ, and soak in the energy of live entertainment that will keep the party going all evening. With delicious food, great company, and plenty of family-friendly activities, this is the perfect way to wrap up your Bearkat Family Weekend on a high note.       Texas Prison Museum

      The Texas Prison Museum offers an intriguing glimpse into the lives of the state's imprisoned citizens. The museum features numerous exhibits detailing the history of the Texas prison system, featuring a look inside the operations behind the fences and walls.

      Huntsville's prison museum is frequented by a cross-section of the public, ranging from grade-school students on field trips, to tourists from around the world. Come see our expanded museum and see what our 36,000 annual guests find interesting and unknown about the Texas Prison System.

      Explore Huntsville

      Take a stroll through Huntsville’s charming downtown square and discover a variety of local shops—from trendy boutiques and antique stores to SHSU spirit shops and handmade home décor. With friendly faces, unique finds, and a touch of small-town charm, it’s the perfect place for families to shop local and soak up the heart of Huntsville.

      City of Huntsville Tourism - Visit Sam Houston Statue

      A visit to the world's tallest statue of an American hero offers a great perspective of Huntsville. A tribute to courage, the Sam Houston Statue was designed and constructed by artist David Adickes. He dedicated the statue to the City of Huntsville on October 22, 1994. It is the world's tallest statue of an American Hero at 67 feet tall on a 10 foot sunset granite base. Within the Visitor Center, you will find an assortment of visitor information including unique videos, brochures, maps, and a friendly Texas ambassador to help plan your day. Also check out our souvenir Gift Shop full of Texas treasures, collectibles and memorabilia.

      Pine Trees and Wildflowers

      Lose yourself among the majestic trees and natural beauty of the East Texas Pineywoods. Rent a canoe, explore our trails or just relax by the lake. We are a short drive north of Houston, in the Sam Houston National Forest.

      Things to Do

      At Huntsville State Park, you can camp, hike, bike, picnic, fish, swim, paddle, geocache and study nature. We have 21 miles of trails, playgrounds, a bird blind and nature center. Alligators live in the park; read our alligator safety tips.  

      On the lake

      Enjoy water activities on the 210-acre Lake Raven:

      • Fish for crappie, perch, catfish and bass. We have a boat ramp, fishing piers and fish cleaning stations. We allow motor boats, but at idle speed only.
      • Swim in our designated area from 10 a.m. - 8 p.m. (no lifeguards). Read our swimming safety tips before you swim.
      • Rent a kayak. Self-service kayak rentals are available near Raven Lodge.
