Dr. Sandy Hinkley is an Associate Professor of Music at Sam Houston State University, where she serves as the Associate Director of Choral Activities and Coordinator of Music Education. Prior to joining the SHSU faculty, Dr. Hinkley taught choral music for 20 years in Florida at the middle and high school levels. Ensembles under her direction have performed at ACDA State, Southern Division, and National Conferences, as well as at the annual FMEA Professional Development Conference in Tampa, Florida.
Dr. Hinkley has presented sessions at TMEA, TCDA, FMEA, and NAfME conventions, as well as at ACDA state, regional, and national conferences. Her research interests center around choral pedagogy and music literacy, and she has publications in The International Journal of Research in Music Education, Update: Applications of Research in Music Education, Southwestern Musician, and Florida Music Director.
Additionally, Dr. Hinkley oversees the summer SHSU Choral Professional Development Workshop, sponsored by the SHSU Center for Music Education. This annual workshop is designed to provide training for in-service teachers and offers sessions on a wide range of topics that address both pedagogy and current issues in the field. She is passionate about supporting music educators and regularly visits classrooms throughout the school year, ranging from In-Service Professional Development presentations to Pre-UIL clinics with choirs.
Dr. Hinkley received a Ph.D. in Choral Conducting and Music Education from the Florida State University, a Master of Music Education from the University of Central Florida, and a Bachelor of Music Education from the Florida State University.
