One of the fastest growing universities in Texas, Sam Houston State University is a comprehensive public institution of higher education located on a 316-acre main campus in historic Huntsville, 60 miles north of Houston in the Piney Woods region of East Texas. The university has an enrollment of about 21,000 students. In 2022, SHSU received new designations as a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) and as a High Research Activity Institution (R2 status) by the Carnegie Commission.
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics has 27 tenured or tenure-track faculty in mathematics, mathematics education, and statistics. We offer a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Master of Arts and Master of Science degrees in Mathematics, a Bachelor of Science degree in Data Science, and Master of Science degree in Statistics and Data Science, along with several minors at the undergraduate level. Members of active research groups in the department consist of tenured and tenure-track faculty, visitors, and graduate students. The department’s faculty is excited about undergraduate research and developing innovative teaching methods that encourage students to be actively engaged in the study of mathematical sciences.
