Summer Study Abroad Programs 2025

We will offer two Study Abroad programs during the Summer 2025.

1) Barcelona, Spain at the Universitat Abat Oliba CEU, Summer I

2) Tokyo, Japan Summer I

How do these programs work?

These are SHSU Faculty-led programs during the Summer. This means that you would be taking SHSU classes in English that count toward your degree from the SHSU faculty in charge of the program.

Do I get credit toward my degree for these classes?

The classes we offer in all programs are ECON 4360 and ECON 4085. These are classes that can be substituted for upper level Economics classes. For specific substitutions that match your degree program please talk to the faculty in charge of the program, the chair of the Economics and International Business Department or the chair of your major's department (if it is not Economics or International Business). Because we believe this is an invaluable opportunity, we try to be as flexible as possible with the substitutions.

What are the benefits of doing a Summer Study Abroad?

  1. We believe this is a lifetime opportunity. You will
    1. Experience and learn about the host country culture.
    2. Get an exposure to the host country economy and businesses practices.
    3. Visit historic sites and learn about the host country history.
    4. Meet and build relationships and friendships with students and faculty from SHSU and the host university.
  2. It will enhance your career opportunities. Your exposure to these countries and, in particular, to their business environment will be an attractive credential for many jobs that require an understanding of the global business environment.
  3. In our many years offering study abroad programs we have observed how students are positively transformed by this opportunity.

What are the requirements to participate?

Because of the nature of the program space is very limited - we only have accommodations for a maximum of 13 to 14 students in each program.
Minimum requirements: GPA of 2.5 (for the COBA scholarship, the minimum GPA is 2.5) and completion of ECON 2301 or ECON 2302.

What are the costs?

Each program has different costs because of the agreements that we have with the different universities and the cost-of-living of each city.

There are four costs to consider: Summer Tuition, Program Fee, Airfare and General Expenses.

1) Summer tuition: you have to pay the summer tuition for the classes. You do NOT have to pay Rec. Center and Health Center fees ($275) but you do have to pay a study abroad fee ($200).

2) Program Fee: the program fee goes to cover the expenses of the program such as the use of the facilities at the host institution, accommodation, guests speakers and field trips.

3) Airfare: the cost of airfare varies every year.

4) General Expenses: you should budget money for food and other personal expense you will incur during the trip. Talk to the faculty in charge of the program to give you an approximate amount.

In the menu on the right, click on the program you are interested and you can see the more details about the costs and other information.

What are the scholarships available?

There are two scholarships available for students participating in the Study Abroad program. You are eligible for both scholarships.

1) The Office of International Programs (OIP) offers one scholarship and it is $1,000.

2) The College of Business offers another scholarship.

The amount of this scholarship depends on the program. To be eligible for the COBA scholarship you need to be a business major.
