Freshmen Leadership Program
Program Overview
The Freshmen Leadership Program (FLP) is an innovative and challenging program that prepares students for the rigors of leadership roles. The program is offered to exceptional incoming first-year students who have displayed leadership in their high school careers, hold themselves to high academic standards, and desire to obtain leadership positions while at Sam Houston State University.
During the fall and spring semesters of their freshmen year, our program works to provide students with a rich series of learning opportunities designed to test, refine, and further develop their respective leadership interests and abilities. In weekly seminars, (Wednesday afternoons) the Freshmen Leadership Program receives presentations and participates in discussions, in order to gain understanding and familiarity with SHSU and its resources, as well as enhance their skills and abilities needed to serve as effective leaders in the university setting and beyond. The FLP participants also read leadership books and work in small groups to present ideas, in addition to giving back to the community by completing 40 hours of service during their tenure in the program.
