Philosophy

Welcome to the Philosophy Program!

Philosophy fosters a spirit of curiosity and wonder foundational to living the good life, at the same time as it teaches the cultivation of critical skills for communication. Our faculty, staff, and students together form a vibrant intellectual community that celebrates dialogue and the affirmation of difference.

The Philosophy Program offers a wide range of undergraduate courses that examine contemporary moral problems, bioethics, philosophy of science, philosophy of biology, feminist philosophy, philosophy of race, existentialism, philosophy of religion, philosophy of crime and justice, philosophy of mind and psychology, and aesthetics among others. In addition, courses are offered in the history of philosophy and other traditional areas such as logic and critical thinking. We are also home to the Minor in Ethics.

Our faculty members are engaged in cutting-edge research and are committed to research led teaching that conveys to students a passion for learning, and for writing. Faculty frequently mentor students in undergraduate research, welcome Honors contracts, and facilitate independent study. Students interested in philosophy (majoring, minoring, or just sampling some of our exciting offerings) enjoy the community celebrated in our Philosophy Club and in our honors society Phi Sigma Tau.
