Miscellena nell'opera
Marta di Flotow
ADD14, PP.52.12
Friedrich von Flotow (1812-83) was mainly known for this opera from 1847. As with the other non-Italian repertoire, one cannot know when or how Ponchielli came to know it. His activities as a student in Milan remain a closed book outside of his records from the conservatory.
The predominance of presentations of arias throughout this commentary set it apart from the bulk of the works that emphasize instrumental and choral quotes. One very peculiar aspect of this score is where, at some point, a librarian cut off a too long page in the score that coincides with measure 87 in the score. Except for the first eighth note in the measure, the remainder of the measure was re-created using (likely) the same piano-vocal score that Ponchielli used to create this piece.
There is a march listed that is based on themes from Marta; however, no such score has turned up. One might find a section of the "Miscellena" that was extracted as no such march is listed in the library catalog compiled during the career of Raffaele Coppola as leader.
