Meyerbeer
Commentaries on Meyerbeer Operas
Giacomo Meyerbeer(1791-1864) was a German of Jewish extraction. His operas have generally been described as being of the "grand opera" variety requiring musical and theatrical resources available to few opera houses or pocketbooks. The inclusion of two of Meyerbeer's works in this collection by Ponchielli exhibits both his eclecticism and his audience's fondness for the dramatic.
