Juan Garza, baritone, joined the SHSU music faculty in the fall 2024. He obtained his Master of Music in Vocal Performance and Pedagogy from the University of Houston, studying under the guidance of Dr. Timothy Jones. Additionally, he earned his Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from Stephen F. Austin State University, where he was instructed by Dr. Scott LaGraff.
Favorite opera credits include Figaro (Le nozze di Figaro), Gianni Schicchi (Gianni Schicchi), Belcore (L'elisir d'amore), Mr. Ford (The Merry Wives of Windsor), Kezal (The Bartered Bride), M. Choufleuri (M. Choufleuri restera chez lui le...), Blansac (La scala di seta), Vater (Hänsel und Gretel), John Styx (Orpheus in the Underworld), Pimpinone (Pimpinone), Gustave (Dinner at Eight), and Marcello (La bohème). A frequent performer of new operas, Mr. Garza has had the pleasure of premiering the roles of Ricordi (Happy Endings), Doctor (Breath of Life) with Lone Star Lyric and Lt. Sprane (The Measure of Love), Dottore (Communicable) with Operativo Houston.
Equally as comfortable in music theater and Gilbert and Sullivan operetta, he has sung Joe (The Most Happy Fella), The Baker (Into the Woods), Herbie (Gypsy) to name a few and Dick Deadeye (HMS Pinafore), Tom Brown (The Zoo), Sir Roderic Murgatroyd (Ruddigore), and Don Alhambra (Gondoliers).
As sought after performer of oratorio, his credits include soloist in Mozart’s Requiem, Handel’s Messiah, Faure’s Requiem, Schubert's Mass in G, Beethoven's Ninth, Rutter's Mass of the Children, Dubois’s Seven Last Words of Christ and Saint-Saëns’s Oratorio de Noël.
Mr. Garza also serves as an Adjunct Professor of Voice at Lone Star College-Kingwood where he teaches applied voice and lyric diction. In addition to his role in academia, fulfills the position of Musikdirigent for the Houston Saengerbund, the oldest musical society in Houston. He has received several awards, including being the Winner of the Stephen F. Austin State University Concerto/Aria Competition, a four-time finalist at the Texoma Regional NATS auditions, and securing second place in the Young Musicians Competition organized by the El Paso Society of Musicians for the Future.
His students have gained much acclaim in their work, shown by receiving numerous awards and scholarships to acclaimed music schools to further their education. They have been awarded Superior Ratings at UIL State Solo and Ensemble, earned a place in the Texas All-State Choir, receive Tommy Tune Awards, won Greater Houston NATS, gained entrance into the Houston Grand Opera Bauer Family High School Voice Studio, and sung on National Broadway tours.
