Biography

Dr. Joshua S. Haynes is assistant professor of Native North American history at Sam Houston State University. Prior to his arrival at SHSU, Dr. Haynes was an assistant professor of history at McKendree University; he also spent four years at the University of Southern Mississippi, where he taught a bevy of courses on violence, captivity, and borderlands in native North America. 

Dr. Haynes earned his Ph.D. in History with a Graduate Certificate in Native American Studies at the University of Georgia in 2013. His scholarship, informed by digital mapping applications, focuses on interethnic violence and state formation in indigenous societies. He is the author of Patrolling the Border: Theft and Violence on the Creek-Georgia Frontier, 1770-1706 (University of Georgia Press, 2018). Most recently, he contributed a chapter to an edited volume on prisoners of war in U.S. history, edited by Daniel Krebs and Lorien Foote. 

Dr. Haynes made his television debut as on on-camera historical consultant in a 2013 episode of the TLC series, "Who Do You Think You Are?"
