Student Teaching
To prepare teacher candidates who are ready for Day 1 teaching upon entering their career, most of our programs employ a yearlong residency (YLR) model of clinical teaching. This model allows teacher candidates to engage in a classroom for an entire year, gaining deeper experience to enhance teaching skills. With support from mentor teachers and university faculty, teacher candidates work alongside a cohort of peers and are continually learning throughout the school year.
How Does YLR work?
In the yearlong residency, teacher candidates begin yearlong residency in a P-12 classroom the first semester of their senior year with 2-3 days per week devoted to time in the school classroom and the remaining weekdays used for university coursework. The second semester, teacher candidates are in the P-12 classroom a full five days per week. SHSU partners with over 75 school districts, and many of these districts offer an opportunity for teacher candidates to apply for and earn up to $20,000 while participating in YLR.
